Philly’s Frances Quinlan took a trip to Seattle last March (pre-pandemic), where she performed live for KEXP. Featuring a brief interview with longtime KEXP host Cheryl Waters, the set has finally been released on YouTube. Quinlan, the lead singer of Hop Along, released her debut album Likewise in January of this year.

The singer/songwriter performed several tracks off Likewise for KEXP, including “Detroit Lake,” “Now That I’m Back,” “Rare Thing,” and “Went to LA.” Quinlan performed these renditions alone, without a backing band, only using an electric guitar to cut through her expressive vocals. The performance is stripped-back, raw, and emotional: Quinlan even remarks “you can entirely change the tone, the emotion of the song” after being asked about how instrumentation contributes to the identity of her work.
