As the holidays grow closer, musicians are celebrating with special projects and taking advantage of live-stream performances in support of NIVA’s Save our Stages advocacy. While the pandemic continues to prohibit live concerts, independent music venues are struggling to stay open, prompting the closure of beloved spaces like South Philly’s Boot and Saddle and the threat of other spaces (like Voltage Lounge) also shutting down for good. Local artists have been making efforts to raise funds to keep live music alive, and two new efforts came to light over the weekend.

A long list of musicians is featured on The Philly Holiday Album, set to release on December 20. Local acts like Ali Awan, The Dawn Drapes, Madalean Gauze, Tate Trap Rabbit are some of the featured artists on the project, with more to be announced. Proceeds from The Philly Holiday Album will go towards NIVA and Toys For Tots.

Philly singer-songwriter Roger Harvey announced his Roger Harvey & Family Holiday Show will be live streaming free but encouraging donations to support NIVA. Harvey shared via Instagram that many special guests will be joining the live stream on December 19, with announcements to follow.

The sentiment of independent venues to artists and music lovers was emphasized in Harvey’s Instagram about Boot and Saddle upon its closure last month,

“RIP @bootandsaddle— This picture was taken on March 6th, 2020 at the last show we had the opportunity to play before lockdown, a night that has been replaying in my mind all year. I remember learning at soundcheck that SXSW had been called off due to Covid & all of us standing around discussing what was gonna happen. It sometimes seems like a lifetime ago. Absolutely heartbroken to hear this news today but so incredibly grateful to have had such a welcoming place to both see & play so many memorable shows.”To support both projects and help save live music, follow the Philly Holiday Album on Instagram for updates and RSVP to the Roger Harvey & Family Holiday Show here.
