Learn more about the Black Music City project with host Suzann Christine

Submissions are now being accepted for Black Music City, a joint project between WXPN, WRTI, and REC Philly that will direct $30,000 in grant funding to Black artists in the Philadelphia region.

The project will provide grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 to artists working across all disciplines, who have until the last Monday of this month to submit their proposal at blackmusiccity.com. Additionally, recipients will be profiled in a video series hosted by artist Suzann Christine, who introduced herself and talked about the project a little more in an introductory video released today.

“We all know that Philadelphia has been at the forefront of some of the most significant musical developments throughout time,” she says. “So for this project, Black Music City, Philly’s Black music history will be the source of inspiration and interpretation by today’s Black creatives.”

Christine stressed the interdisciplinary nature of Black Music City, saying “This project calls on Black creatives working on any medium. So that means singers, writers, dancers, photographers, videographers. If you’re a creative, we want you to submit your ideas on how you can honor Philadelphia’s Black music history through your creativity.”

Applications for projects are being accepted through January 25th; Christine will announce recipients next month, and will follow each winner’s journey through an ongoing series of vlogs, with project unveilings happening in June for Black Music History Month.
