February is Black History Month, and it would be an understatement to say that Black music has been the driving force that has propelled and shaped American popular culture from the beginning. Culture Cypher Radio does not exclusively play Black artists. Each episode is made up of music made by people from all walks of life, but genres like hip-hop, jazz, and funk that feature heavily on the show are the direct result of Black folks’ creative contributions and that fact makes the show firmly rooted in the Black experience.

February is also J Dilla month. One of the greatest creative minds that rap music has ever produced, every February, music fans, DJs, and writers around the world take time to celebrate Dilla’s legacy. This month, BBE released the 20th Anniversary edition of Dilla’s solo debut, Welcome 2 Detroit, packed with cassette demos and alternate takes of cuts like “Y’all Ain’t Ready” and Dilla’s cover of Donald Byrd’s Jazz-Funk classic “Think Twice”. In addition to playing his music, we celebrate Dilla’s legacy by playing cuts from artists that build upon his musical innovations like Madlib (“The New Normal”) and Japanese beatsmith Yotaro (“Skyfield”).

There’s no way to properly quantify the impact that this rich musical legacy has had on today’s cultural landscape. Black music is a gift to the world and this month (and every month!), we celebrate its power and diversity. Listen to the show in full and check out the Culture Cypher Radio February chart below.
