One of the unfortunate parts of making a cohesive album is realizing when a song just won’t work for it. This was the sad reality that Maxwell Stern encountered while he was recording Impossible Sum. Usually that cut content never sees the light of day, but back in December Stern released one of those scrapped songs with “Springing From the Source.” Now he has released his second Impossible Sum B-sides track, “I Reached Out to the City.”

Listening to the song, you can hear why it was not included on Impossible Sum and even how much it differs from “Springing From the Source.” Now, this isn’t to say that it’s bad — on the contrary, it’s a great song. But it is much warmer sounding than any of the other content from the Impossible Sum recording session back in 2019. But despite this difference Stern didn’t want to abandon it altogether, as he explains through Instagram,

I love this tune but it felt different than the rest of the record, so we saved it for a while.

You can watch the video for “I Reached Out to the City” and be sure to listen to Impossible Sum if you haven’t already (or even if you have). You can also download the song for Bandcamp Friday here.
