Lucy Dacus only just announced her upcoming album, Home Video. Her third full-length is billed as an exploration of how Dacus feels returning to her hometown of Richmond, Virginia after years of changing and growing.

The meaning makes her performance of “Hot & Heavy” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert particularly poignant. Dacus found herself recording the Late Show performance at Virginia Repertory Theatre. Her mother had often played piano for the musicals performed there, and Dacus herself acted in the shows there from time to time.

The staging puts the present Dacus in direct confrontation with who she was as a child, encapsulating the complex feelings of the song in a subtle way. Check out Dacus and her band’s performance below of “Hot & Heavy” below and pre-order Home Video here. Dacus also announced a fall tour that brings her to Union Transfer on October 20th, COVID-permitting. Information here.
