Every once in a while, there’s an artist that just leaves you in awe. It’s like the second you hear them something clicks, and you automatically know this isn’t some over-polished track or industry plant, this is sheer talent. That exact energy is present on Yves Tumor’s latest release, The Asymptomatic World.

Their last album, Heaven To A Tortured Mind, was named one of XPN’s best albums of 2020 — The Key’s Alex Smith called it “the twisted and beautiful glam rock fantasy we needed in 2020” — but they somehow manage to outdo themself. A visceral experience, the EP is full of thumping basslines, screeching synths, and invigorating beats. Dim dance-punk tracks like “Secrecy Is Incredibly Important to The Both of Them” feel like having a breakdown in the middle of a moshpit. There’s a sense of violence to the whole thing, most evident in the haunting darkwave cut “…And Loyalty Is A Nuisance Child” which feels like impending doom as it slams and crashes. With blinding brutality and unnerving whispers, the final track “Katrina” is akin to Armageddon.

Tumor will be performing at Making Time’s PURE Halloween show on October 28 at Warehouse on Watts. You can grab tickets here and stream the EP below.
