On the heels of their North American run with Modest Mouse, Philly rockers The Districts shared news today that they will release their fifth studio LP in early 2022. Great American Painting is out on February 4th via Fat Possum, and the first single from the record — a beat-heavy dancefloor jam called “I Want To Feel It All” — is out today.

Picking up where the band left off with “Cheap Regrets” — XPN’s most-played song of 2020 — the new single sits firmly in New Order / Tears for Fears retro-futuristic electronic rock territory, and The Districts frontperson Rob Grote describes the song in a press release as delving into deeply introspective states: “‘I Want To Feel It All’ is about feeling everything possible all at once,” he says in a press release. “…emotional fireworks and loving the universe and everyone in it. But it also saves room for being about death and the darkness underlying all existence, and forgiveness and pain and acceptance.”

The band shared a trippy music video for the song this morning, and it’s full of flickering images and plumes of multicolored smoke as the band plays live in a grassy field.

“The video takes place in the twilit Pennsylvania hills, where we perform with fireworks in the ever fleeting present this song seeks to grasp,” Grote says. “The surreal undertone to the video represents the detached dreamlike world this song lives in, while the unspoiled American landscape is a symbol of idealism and the natural mystery that inspires our work.”

Great American Painting was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles with producer Joe Chiccarelli, and releases on February 4th via Fat Possum Records (grab a pre-order here). The band’s extensive North American and European run kicks off later this month, featuring their newly pared-down trio configuration of Grote, drummer Braden Lawrence, and guitarist Pat Cassidy. The tour finds them playing several regional dates; November 26th at Millersville’s Phantom Power, as well as two sold out Philly shows (December 27th opening for Dr. Dog at The Fillmore, December 30th at Johnny Brenda’s); tickets remain for their New Year’s Eve show at Johnny Brenda’s (more at the XPN Concert Calendar).
