Unconventional pop artist Shamir shared new single “Reproductive” today alongside a lo-fi music video filmed at Front Street’s Boom Room Studio. “Reproductive” is the first single Shamir has put out in 2022, and the third in a string of singles — including “Gay Agenda” and “Cisgender” — that the nonbinary, Philly-area musician has recently released about gender identity.

“Life gets tricky when you’re breaking curses from another life / In the hopes that the next one will be / A reward for all the strife I hold within me” sings Shamir on “Reproductive,” his sweet countertenor voice lofting the heaviness of the lyrics’ meaning. Like much of Shamir’s alternative-pop discography, “Reproductive” shines a light on Shamir’s courageous journey of self-discovery. His dreamy melodies and angelic Nina Simone-esque vocals do the tough work of assuaging even the most anxious of themes and almost literally putting his deepest fears to bed.

Watch below for the video for “Reproductive.” We last saw Shamir perform in Philadelphia at Union Transfer opening for Lucy Dacus on October 20th. In 2022, he’ll be opening for Courtney Barnett on a tour where the closest shows to Philly are two sold-out nights at 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Philadelphia fans will have to stay tuned for their chance to see Shamir at home.
