West Coast jazz visionary Kamasi Washington has emerged back on the scene in an appropriately larger-than-life way.

This week, he released his first new, original song in over a year — the bracing, racing single “The Garden Path.” On Wednesday night, the saxophonist and composer made his TV debut to perform the song on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and his band has seemingly doubled in size, numbering 14 musicians fleshing the composition out with congas and percussion, vocals and horns, and Washington at the center, staring down the camera and leading the charge.

The frenzied nature of it all is a reflection of the song’s themes. “The world feels turned upside down,” says Washington in a press release. “There’s so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet—no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now. No matter how smart you are, it’s hard not to feel blind.”
