No matter what the calendar says, today is your lucky day when it comes to newly released albums of distinction. Florence + the Machine return with their majestic and euphoric fifth album, Dance Fever. The taut Dropout Boogie finds The Black Keys firing on all cylinders (and collaborating with members of ZZ Top and Reigning Sound). Though still mostly unheard as of this writing, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers is all but certain to be another jewel in the crown of the elusive rap superstar.
Kevin Morby confronts personal ghosts on the rollicking This is a Photograph. New Orleans party-starters Tank and the Bangas pump it up on Red Balloon. Lyle Lovett’s 12th of June is the first new album in a decade from the XPN cornerstone. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood team up with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner to form The Smile; their debut, A Light for Attracting Attention, is a corrosive collision of each group’s style.
