There’s really no such thing as an ‘off week’ when it comes to new album releases. Iconoclastic legend Neneh Cherry reworks her biggest hits with the help of Robyn, Sia, and others on The Versions. A decade into their reunion, Steve Wynn and The Dream Syndicate explore electronic textures on the Eno-nodding Ultraviolet Battle Hymns and True Confessions. Michaela Anne’s Oh to Be That Free is a wistful and nostalgic reflection from the Nashville songwriter.
After a six year break (and two albums with offshoot band Loma), Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg returns with the sweeping The Great Awakening. Irish poet Sinead O’Brien shows off punk energy on her engaging debut, Time Bend and Break the Bower. Several EPs of note are out this week as well: Elvis Costello and Liverpool mainstay Allan Mayes resurrect their pre-fame group Rusty for a debut release 50 years in the making. Philly’s Great Time continue their genre-busting streak with Sounds Like ___ [Vol. 3]. Inspired by the video games of her childhood, Jenny Owen Youngs levels up on It’s Dangerous to Go Alone.
