Philly indie hero Alex G is in the midst of introducing listeners to his next body of work, and the ride is as unpredictable as ever. Leading with the unusual-as-heck numetal-worship of “Blessing,” and following that with “Runner” — one of the best pop songs Alex has ever written — we today got the latest teaser from God Save The Animals, and in some ways it splits the difference.

“Cross The Sea” is imbued with grit and grime, a distorted pulse that grips you from the outset, and it leads into vocals tastefully treated with autotune; it’s poppy, but it’s weird pop, and a swift beat guides the way; the music video by artist Elliot Bech, which shows off-kilter animated animals popping up around Philly locales like Kelly Drive and Mt. Moriah Cemetery, is a perfect compliment to its unusual vibe.

Take a watch down below, and listen to Alex’s live on-the-air interview with WXPN’s Dan Reed from Monday, July 25th; they talk about the making of the new record, about Alex’s plans to take it on the road, and listen to a couple of the singles from it. Alex G returns to Philadelphia for two nights at Union Transfer on November 18th and 19th; more information can be found at the Concerts and Events page of XPN.org, and God Save The Animals can be pre-ordered here.
