New Jersey’s C.J. Davis is getting his long-running project Harrowgrove back into the swing of things, and is pushing its sound further than ever before. While Davis’ past work has straddled a balance beam between gritty Nine Inch Nails-esque industrial rock and moody R&B, his latest singles — all working towards a project called DEEP PROXIMITY — venture into new territory.
“Belong,” out this week, is a moody and ethereal song that builds and broods with somber strings arranged by itaya, a Poland-based composer Davis connected with online. With Davis’ voice reverberating faintly in the distance, it’s a haunting and emotional number that meditates on desire and departure, simmering and cutting to the core.
