The theme for this year’s Public Radio Music Day is “Discovering the Sound of Local Communities,” and here at WXPN, that’s something we’re working on every day of the year. Between local artists in rotation to Mike Vasilikos’ Local Picks every weekday, to our weekly WXPN Local Show with John Vettese, and live shows from Free at Noon to the XPoNential Music Festival, we’re always looking for a way to uplift musicians in our community.

For this PRMD on Wednesday, October 26th, we’ll present an afternoon video webcast from WXPN studios hosted by Vettese and showcasing new live sessions from two of Philadelphia’s most exciting live bands. First up is Velvet Rouge, a dynamic and dramatic rock and roll four-piece fronted by the charismatic lead singer and songwriter Gina Zo; they channel Jane’s Addiction and Elle King, and are a band to watch as they release their first singles, leading up to a debut album in 2023. Next is SNACKTIME, the high-energy eight-piece brass band who, if you’ve been to any sort of show or festival since concerts returned last summer, you’ve probably crossed paths with them. They’ve made their presence known on the live scene, they’re starting to make waves in the studio as well, and we can’t wait for you to feel the energy they bring to our studio.

In between the live sets, we’ll travel into our archives to bring you a collection of performance videos highlighting the many ways we are able to help connect local musicians with bigger audiences, from Japanese Breakfast and Alex G’s performances for the Key Studio Sessions on WXPN Local, to our lockdown series Unprecedented Sessions that found Cosmic Guilt playing in the loft of a converted church, to concert videos from XPNFest and NONCOMM starring Dr. Dog, Zeek Burse, Hop Along and more!
