Each week during Black History Month, World Cafe correspondent John Morrison has been taking us through the history of R&B through the decades. In this session, we head into the new millenium, from the early 2000s to today — an era that has been dominated by artists like Beyoncé, even though, as Morrison notes, critics didn’t always “get it.”

“The genre, in general, gets the short end of the stick in critical circles, and that happened a lot in the 2000s,” Morrison said. “There was just, like, a disconnect.”

Morrison talks about how the critical reception of R&B has changed and about some of the artists who’ve made an impact since Y2K.
