Eoin Murphy likes to stay busy. The guitarist and vocalist is a constant collaborator around the Philly scene; over the past year, we’ve hosted him in the studio backing Solomon Temple, Ryan Gilfillian, and Taylor Kelly. This week, he joins us with his own songwriting, a dreamy concoction of psychedelic soul he produces under the name Brushstroke.
Murphy has been releasing singles through the project for a little over five years via his Bandcamp page, fusing his aching voice and intuitive knack for melody with cool grooves and sleek shredding. Next week, Brushstroke releases a new EP, and we get a taste of what we’ll hear on it in this week’s Key Studio Session.
Backed by Ajay on bass, Tuck Ryan and Jonill on Keys, and Kyon on drums, Brushstroke shows that it can stretch out to sublime tones on “Moonlight,” but doesn’t shy from hooky pop romance (“Save A Pillow”) or reflective and resplendent harmonies (“Neon Museum”). It all gets started with a song called “Bad Habits,” and you can watch the whole performance below.
