Arlo Parks find her strength in softness on her sophomore record
Arlo Parks made one of World Cafe’s favorite albums of 2021. Collapsed in Sunbeams was a vulnerable record filled with arena-ready hooks that radiated warmth and light. We weren’t the only ones who felt that way. She took home Britian’s most prestigious music award, the Mercury Prize. That meant a lot of anticipation for her follow-up album.
The good news? My Soft Machine delivers.

Parks’ sophomore record is sonically adventurous, but her voice continues to be at the core of the music. In this session, Parks joins us from her new home in Los Angeles to talk about how she developed the album, fighting “sophomore slump” expectations, and why she wanted to work with Phoebe Bridgers on “Pegasus.”
