Soul and R&B artist Devon Gilfillian has released a live rendition of “Right Kind Of Crazy” from his critically acclaimed album, Love You Anyway.
The video opens with Gilfillian’s mysterious and cyclical guitar picking before fading between the other band members all filtered in a stark black and white lighting. As the minimal heartbeat of the drums comes in, Gilfillian opens, “Loving you, is like a labyrinth. I get so lost, in your absence.” Peeled back and stripped of studio production, his pained lyrics and soft vocal timbre take center stage, revealing the true emotional weight and intent behind the song. Such sentiments manifest fully on the chorus as the band flawlessly grooves behind Gilfillian’s falsetto; like a heavenly homage to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.
The rising singer-songwriter’s third album, Love You Anyway, came out on April 7th via Fantasy Records and hit number one on the College Radio Soul/R&B chart upon release. “All I Really Wanna Do,” a top five hit at Triple A Radio, was named one of Rolling Stone’s ‘Best Songs of 2023 So Far’ and was included in The New York Times’ “Morning Spring 2023” official playlist as well as CBS Morning’s official playlist “Mixtape.”
The Philly-area native has been a favorite at WXPN since his 2018 performance at XPoNential Music Festival, and he embarks on a headlining tour of the U.S. this August, with dates in Richmond, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Philadelphia. Gilfillian plays Philly’s Brooklyn Bowl on September 28th as part of his upcoming tour; full dates below and more info at the WXPN Concerts and Events page.
