If you aren’t already aware, Blue Smiley was (and has continued to be) one of the most prolific homegrown shoegaze acts in the Philly scene in the past decade. Fronted by Brian Nowell, whose untimely passing in 2017 shook the local music community, the band has amassed a cult following over the years, influencing other acts like Full Body 2, TAGABOW, Feeble Little Horse, Alex G, and many more.
Since 2017, the only formal releases on the band’s streaming platforms have been the 2016 album ok and 2017’s return. However, this fall, Massachusetts-based label Topshelf Records will be partnering with the band to give their fans a chance to own copies of their existing discography, as well as to add previously unreleased music to streaming platforms.
Topshelf Records is home to a variety of celebrated artists and bands, such as Knifeplay, Mid-Air Thief, A Country Western, Sweet Pill, and more. Blue Smiley fits in perfectly with their roster, and this partnership is sure to resonate with anyone who listens to them. As of today, in fact, the partnership will be going live, announcing the release of ok and return on vinyl, cassette, and CD. In addition, the previously unreleased track “coma” will be yours to listen to; a blast from the return-era past that further proves why this band continues to be a driving force in shoegaze, lofi indie, and DIY rock circles.
Make sure to check out “coma” and grab a physical copy of your favorite Blue Smiley record today, and keep your eyes peeled for more upcoming releases and re-issues via Topshelf.
