Voting is still open for WXPN’s 2023 fall countdown: the 885 Greatest Songs By Women (As chosen by YOU). Here, Assistant Program Director and on-air host Jim McGuinn reveals why Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power” captured his number one vote:
“I just voted in the countdown for the 885 Greatest Songs Sung by Women and I voted for a whole bunch of people, including Courtney Barnett and PJ Harvey. But those artists would not be who they are without the contribution from Patti Smith. And Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power” got my number 1 vote. It is a song that has reduced me to tears and a song that I have looked to for inspiration and motivation.” And Patti has always conducted her life with such dignity and grace and passion and love for the music and for humanity and I want to recognize Patti with my vote in this countdown.”
