From longtime local favorites to genre legends, this week brings new albums from an eclectic variety of artists. Four years after the triumphant Saint Cloud, Waxahatchee’s Tigers Blood is a masterclass in modern Americana crafted alongside talented collaborators. The latest step in the ongoing evolution of his blues-based sound, Gary Clark Jr.’s JPEG RAW is an arresting and urgent fusion of rock, rap, and jazz. Few songwriters have a way with words and melody like Adrianne Lenker; the Big Thief guitarist’s latest solo album, Bright Future, is an entirely analog recording created with a small group of friends. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of their debut single, reinvigorated noise-pop icons The Jesus and Mary Chain reconvene for their first LP in seven years, Glasgow Eyes.
Having recently relocated from Philly to North Carolina, Rosali makes her Merge debut with her charming and measured fourth album, Bite Down. Los Angeles mainstay Empress Of breaks away from the confines of the label system with the self-released (and guest packed) For Your Consideration. Experimental pop conjurer Julia Holter’s Something in the Room She Moves melds Glass-esque minimalism with inviting harmonies for an otherworldly set. New York-based Colombian duo Salt Cathedral deploy a globetrotting effervescence on their second album, Before it’s Gone.
