Joining us for this Indie Rock Hit Parade live session is a group whose danceable art-pop might have you mistaking our studio for the Mudd Club or CBGB. New York combo Psymon Spine is formed around the core trio of bassist Peter Spears, guitarist Noah Prebish, and keyboardist/producer “Brother” Michael Rudinski. Forming nearly a decade ago, Psymon Spine first came to our attention in the summer of 2020, when they released “Milk,” a single featuring IRHP veteran Barrie and a charming video set in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons (it was mid-2020, after all). “Milk” eventually made its way on to Charismatic Megafauna, Psymon Spine’s second full-length that also boasted the party-starting standout “Jumprope.” Aided by drummer Zeb Stern and singer/guitarist Sarah Aument, Psymon Spine released their third album, Head Body Connector, earlier this year. They stopped by our studios while on a post-SXSW tour to make their IRHP debut.
Our session begins with the first three songs from Head Body Connector, starting with gliding anthem “Boys;” a showcase for the call-and-response vocals between Aument, Spears, and Prebish. Fleet-fingered bass licks are the driving force on “Wizard Acid,” and “Be the Worm” shifts from ping-ponging guitars to dubby screams and shouts. The band treats us to a run-through of “Jumprope” before returning to the new album for the sly ‘life in a band’ commentary of “Bored of Guitar.”
