Producer extraordinaire RJD2 is back with a new instrumental cut, “Catch The Exit Door,” the newest single from Visions out of Limelight, his upcoming fourteenth studio album.
The single is a funky blend of live instrumentation and retro samples, juxtaposing a boom-bap drum groove with some dirty horn lines that sound straight out of a 70s cop show. Fans of the more cinematic stylings of hip-hop producers like Danger Mouse and DJ Shadow will certainly enjoy this; then again, if you know anything about jazz rap, you’ve probably heard RJD2’s work at some point, whether it’s his collaborations with Philly musicians like Son Little, his theme song for the hit TV drama Mad Men, or his work with a wide variety of music legends like Astrud Gilberto, Hikaru Utada, and MF DOOM, to name a few.
