After a two-year hiatus, Orion Sun is officially back.
The Philly-rooted, LA-based artist just released the single “Already Gone” with an accompanying visualizer on June 12 via Mom + Pop. It’s a gorgeous track, with a trippy beat and haunting vocals. After the end of a relationship and a move to the West Coast, it also marks the start of a new chapter for her.
“[“Already Gone” is] about that first night alone when your partner moves out and it’s obvious nothing will ever been the same,” Orion Sun said in a recent statement. “You try to change it or fix it or run from it but you have to come home eventually. The silence becomes heavy like water. Everything was a task. Everything was hard. I was holding on to hope like a life raft. Only in retrospect is is kind of funny. It seems dramatic but it was so true to me then.”
Orion Sun hails from Mount Laurel and was inspired by the music of her Baptist church upbringing. After coming out as queer and leaving home, she settled in Philadelphia and was part of an underground collective of musicians and artists. Her influences include Black artists from varying genres, from Billie Holiday to Bill Withers to Lauryn Hill.
In the time between her 2022 EP Getaway and this newest track, Orion Sun was featured on Fred Again..’s track “ItsNotREEAALLLLLLLL” and opened for Daniel Caesar’s Superpowers World Tour. “Already Gone” is the start of more new music to come ; hear the song in the visualizer below.
