After teasing a new project, Brooklyn-based indie-rock band Pom Pom Squad have officially announced their upcoming album Mirror Starts Moving Without Me. Out October 25th on City Slang, it promises to be an eclectic and fully loaded record, a sonic shift for the band… and if the singles are anything to show for it, it’s safe to say the promises will be delivered.
“Spinning,” is the most recent single from the album, a thrashing, scream-at-the-top-of-your-lungs track about growth through trauma. “The song represents a moment when I was learning to cope with painful memories of the past and how they’ve shaped my future,” shares frontwoman Mia Berrin in a press release. “In accepting them, I’ve been able to find more freedom and forgiveness within myself.” The music video, directed by Berrin and Benjamin Lieber, further highlights the song’s themes of watching and analyzing yourself with a creative surveillance-room setup, that features Berrin as both the surveillant and surveilled.
As for the album, its themes similarly revolve around identity and self-reflection. “The album title is inspired by a horror movie trope and relates to the uncanny feeling of seeing yourself reflected — both literally and figuratively. It was my most challenging creative experience to date and a true labor of love,” said Berrin. By self-examining the limits of their identity, the band primes the setting to break any boxed categorizations down.
