Philly native and neo-soul icon Bilal released a new single and music video “Sunshine” on Friday. It’s the first single from his upcoming LP, Adjust Brightness, set to release next month. Adjust Brightness will be Bilal’s sixth album, following 2015’s In Another Life.

“I realized a long time ago that, with the specter of AI and streaming, we risk losing our humanity,” Bilal said in a recent statement. “With Adjust Brightness, it was like: let’s make some shit that is going to confuse the damn computer. We’re bringing a love frequency — emphasizing the warmth, the love. It’s an intimate record.”

“Sunshine” mixes a fast tempo with ethereal vocals to create an addictive sound. It feels almost like a new kind of retro-futurism: a sound that’s reminiscent of millennium cyberspace, still decidedly human.

Bilal will be at World Cafe Live on October 9th. Tickets and more information available on XPN’s Concert Calendar.
