I have returned from my vacation and, lucky me, there are just about a billion new albums to enjoy this week. Evergreen, Sophie Allison’s fourth Soccer Mommy album, continues the young artist’s genre-pushing trajectory; this time she worked with Animal Collective/Deerhunter producer Ben H. Allen. With Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson serving as the group’s newest member, Pixies enter their newest era with their ominous 10th album, The Night the Zombies Came. For Still + Bright, her third solo album, Tennessee songwriter Amythyst Kiah teamed up with Billy Strings, Butch Walker, and more to bring her gothic folk anthems to life. On her last album, Laura Marling penned odes to an imagined daughter; four years later, Marling’s actual newborn serves as the primary muse for Patterns in Repeat.
Bolstered by their Tiny Desk Contest-winning composition “wonder eye,” Utah ensemble Little Moon showcase the acrobatic vocals of Emma Hardyman on their second LP, Dear Divine. On her solo debut, What a Relief, Muna member Katie Gavin veers away from her main project’s widescreen pop into more acoustic, intimate sonic territories. Drawing inspiration from Through the Looking Glass, Mia Berrin conjures a psychedelic world on Pom Pom Squad’s bold second album, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me. The first release from Maria McKee’s beloved group Lone Justice since 1986, Viva Lone Justice features new and archival recordings from the Los Angeles combo’s original lineup.
