It’s a scientific fact* that January is the single longest month of the year. Before we turn the calendar page, here are a few more fresh albums to explore. Will Oldham’s latest as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Purple Bird, finds the prolific songwriter teaming up with producer David Ferguson and collaborating with John Anderson and Tim O’Brien for a rustic set. Nashville mainstay Lilly Hiatt’s sixth LP, Forever, is an optimistic and reflective collection that features an appearance by Philly-rooted favorite Scot Sax. Hallucinating Love is the third full-length from UK duo Maribou State, offering propulsive rhythms and soaring vocals from frequent guest Holly Walker. For another take on British funk, veteran combo Cymande return with their first album in a decade, Renascence.
With acolytes Nick Hakim and John Carroll Kirby in tow, R&B vocalist Eddie Chacon continues his adventurous second act with Lay Low. An offshoot of Circa Survive, My Chemical Romance, and Thursday, L.S. Dunes return with hard-rocking anthems on their Will Yip-produced sophomore LP, Violet. Buffalo legends moe. bring 35+ years of progressive psych-rock to their 13th album, Circle of Giants.
