To at least one fan but I’m guessing thousands more, this is “their Super Bowl.” Lucy Dacus yesterday released her video for “Best Guess,” her latest single, thrilling the lesbian community online. The video follows a late 2024 casting call for “hot mascs,” and many fans are ecstatic. “Can’t believe Lucy managed to gather all my favorite mascs to be in one video,” commented one fan, and “This is going to be a formative moment for countless young women,” said another among a barrage of similar sentiments.
In “Best Guess,” Dacus rationalizes the romantic, saying her love interest is her “best guess” at a happy future. She’s not afraid to describe intimate caresses (a theme prevailing in Forever is a Feeling) or cast two dozen of her presumed type to star in the video. This is Dacus at her most vulnerable with the audience, bringing queer culture into the mainstream with her newfound fame.
In any case of internet dialogue, however, there are multiple sides, and they’re fiercely righteous. Dacus’ Instagram post announcing “Best Guess” has been flooded with critiques, mostly addressing the topic of underrepresentation. “Choosing only thin, light skinned people is a major miss,” comments one fan on Dacus’ Instagram, echoing the feeling of many. Though the critiques are valid, they could obscure the progressive visuals of “Best Guess,” and as another fan points out on the Gay Times Instagram post about the video, “this backlash would make sense if Lucy had a bad track record with this sort of thing, but she’s one of the most progressively political and outspoken celebs we’ve got in the mainstream.”
Internet controversy aside, the support for Dacus’ Forever is a Feeling tour is overwhelming. Her April 16th show at Philly’s The Met is already sold out, as well as many other following dates. The record comes out via Geffen on March 28th.
