This just in from XPN favorite Brandi Carlile: the iconic singer-songwriter recorded a breathtaking rendition of Neil Young’s “Philadelphia” for Heart Of Gold, a new collection of contemporary artists performing the rock legend’s music, benefiting his Bridge School nonprofit. You can take a first listen to her cover below.

Brandi Carlile "Philadelphia"

The Oscar-nominated “Philadelphia” was Young’s contribution to the 1993 Jonathan Demme film of the same name; it’s an aching, expressive piano ballad punctuated by a high-register delivery that Carlile absolutely nails in her version. The simplicity, the poignancy, the tenderness rings ever true, and though the song can be a tragic heartstring-puller in some ways, it also is a reflection of the power of love.

Carlile appears on Heart Of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Vol. 1 alongside Fiona Apple, Mumford & Sons, Eddie Vedder, Courtney Barnett, Stephen Marley, The Lumineers and much more. The album arrives to streaming this Friday, April 25th, and vinyl can be pre-ordered here via Cinema Music Group and Killphonic Records. The record benefits The Bridge School, Young’s Hillsborough, California nonprofit that supports individuals with severe speech and physical impairments.
