PRESS PLAY: New Albums out May 30th
Short week, long list of new albums…
I hope you managed to get all your work done after the holiday because this week’s batch of new releases isn’t slowing down. Philly-rooted and road-tested, Mt. Joy’s Hope We Have Fun is drawn from Matt Quinn and his bandmates’ formative experiences on tour. After a series of setbacks, including surgery that left Shirley Manson bedridden, Garbage make a thunderous return on their eighth album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light. On his second solo release in 10 months, Matt Berninger’s second solo album, Get Sunk, is a propulsive and insightful set from The National singer. Plucked from the archives 18 years after it was recorded, Grace Potter’s T Bone Burnett-produced Medicine features the original takes of songs eventually released by the singer’s former band, the Nocturnals.
Low’s Alan Sparhawk reimagines his complex sound with the help of fellow Minnesotans Trampled by Turtles. Stepping away from Stars and Broken Social Scene for the first time in over 15 years, Amy Millan’s I Went to Find You is a reflection on the friends and family who have shaped the Canadian mainstay’s musical outlook. Ben Kweller mourns the death and celebrates the life of his teenage son, Dorian, alongside Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman on Cover the Mirrors. With observational lyrics and lively arrangements, UK combo MRCY present Volume 2, their second collection of conscious soul anthems.
Listen for spotlights on new records like these (and more) every week on the XPN Morning Show and Indie Rock Hit Parade.
