Corey Glover might be best known as the wailing voice in the middle of the sonic maelstrom that is Living Colour’s 1988 smash ”Cult of Personality.” A riff-heavy hard rock anthem warning us of the dangers of following charismatic religious and political leaders, “Cult Of Personality” has had surprising longevity. In the 37 years since its release, the song has grown from ubiquitous hit to popular pro wrestling theme song to classic rock radio staple.

In the years since Living Colour’s commercial height, Glover has been busy lending his voice to a variety of projects that highlight his versatility. Glo​​ver’s 1998 solo album Hymns was a heady mix of Gospel, Rock, and Southern Soul while he spent the 2000s collaborating with jazz-funk outfit Soulive and The Shapeshifter Ensemble. These days, his leads a project called The Soul Experience, who will headline MilkBoy in Philadelphia this Friday, June 20th.

Glover and The Soul Experience have been on the road, thrilling crowds with rollicking covers of R&B classics like Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” and Ohio Players’ “Skin Tight” The band has also been known to throw in a few delightful curveballs, like their powerful take on The Bee Gees’. To Love Somebody.” In an interview with XPN, Glover explained how this eclectic approach to the music keeps things interesting.

“This is the music of our lives, right?”, says Glover. “‘What You Won’t Do For Love’ is on everybody’s playlist, and if you play it in certain audiences, you can’t stop them from singing along!”

With a crack group of instrumentalists and Glover’s voice as soulful and dynamic as ever, The Soul Experience will remind us why Corey Glover is considered one of the greatest singers of his generation.
