PRESS PLAY: New Albums out July 25th
New directions and clever collaborations highlight the last new releases of the month…
In addition to the featured new albums that are out this week, I’d like to draw your attention to a trio of notable reissues: Nick Drake was barely out of his teens when he recorded his 1969 debut; The Making of Five Leaves Left includes Drake’s first-ever recording session at Sound Techniques studio in Chelsea. The third and final album from Elliott Smith’s band Heatmiser, 1995’s Mic City Sons, gets its own expansion courtesy of Third Man with previously unheard demos and outtakes. Originally planned as a companion release to 1998’s Ray of Light, Madonna’s remix collection Veronica Eletronica finally surfaces with sought-after reworks by William Orbit, BT, and others.
On Crown of Roses, her first all-new LP since 2019, Patty Griffin reflects on childhood and motherhood. Tyler Childers’ seventh album, Snipe Hunter, continues the Kentucky songwriter’s collaboration with Rick Rubin and adds Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn to the mix. North Carolina mainstay Indigo De Souza navigated the devastation of Hurricane Helene while recording Precipice; the resulting album is a resilient set of gripping melodies.
A spiritual sequel to 2004’s Studio 150, Paul Weller digs up golden pop nuggets on the covers collection Find El Dorado. Now Would Be a Good Time is the debut album from Folk Bitch Trio, an Australian harmony-forward combo who previously toured with King Gizzard and Alex G. Blurring the line between his main band and his solo work, Cory Hanson’s I Love People features the same musicians as Wand’s Vertigo; this time crafting Laurel Canyon choogle rather than sunbaked psychedelia.
Listen for spotlights on new records like these (and more) every week on the XPN Morning Show and Indie Rock Hit Parade.
