At first blush, it might seem like this is a good week to catch up on previous releases you haven’t gotten around to just yet. Then again, there are a few fresh albums that deserve your attention, so be sure to add these to the list:

To celebrate his 89th birthday (and his cameo in Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster Sinners), living legend Buddy Guy delivers a solid victory lap with his 20th album, Ain’t Done with the Blues. Toronto artist Debby Friday won the Polaris Prize for her 2023 debut, Good Luck; The Starr of the Queen of Life is a confident, industrial-influenced follow-up.

Rootsy family combo The Wood Brothers leap from gospel to jazz to Latin rhythms on their ninth collection of original material, Puff of Smoke. Assisted by former Screaming Females guitarist Marissa Paternoster, New York trio Freezing Cold offer blazing riffs and abundant attitude on their second LP, Treasure Pool.

Listen for spotlights on new records like these (and more) every week on the XPN Morning Show and Indie Rock Hit Parade.
