Earlier this year, Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver told World Cafe’s Kallao that she nearly scrapped the whole album that would become 2025’s Billboard Heart. We’re glad she had the vision to begin again, and bring a little bit of the new record to last Friday’s Free At Noon.

A vocal section of the Music Hall crowd had seen the band in July when they played Fishtown’s Johnny Brenda’s; the rest of them were in for a pleasant surprise. The indie rock five-piece fronted by Dobson their signature fuzzy sound with songs from the recent Billboard Heart, as well as 2020’s Impossible Weight. Listening to the band perform, you can tell why Dobson was asked to design a guitar pedal for the brand Benson: her guitar tone carries a unique blend of buzzing echoes and delay, almost as if it’s coming from underwater.

Deep Sea Diver continues their US tour through September, then flies to Europe in the fall for more shows through the end of the year. See below a photo gallery from Free At Noon. Plus, revisit the World Cafe episode from February here.
