Like a lot of bands during COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, Cut Copy took time away from creating music. In the years that followed, Dan Whitford began accumulating a mountain of demos.

The demos began to inspire his bandmates, including Tim Hoey, who wasn’t even listening to music, let alone making it.

“It was about 5 a.m. I was off feeding my baby,” he remembers of hearing Whitford’s demos. “I just put them on. I guess the first song I heard was the title track, “Moments,” and it just kind of reset me, in a way.”

Cut Copy pieced together Moments over several years, convening in Australia’s Byron Bay to record the album.

Today, Whitford and Hoey join World Cafe to talk about making Moments, how becoming parents influenced their creativity, and about the “toy box” of obscure instruments drummer Mitchell Scott brought to their recording sessions.
