This week’s assortment of new albums is proof that late-year release days can still be full of surprises.

Sharing a title with the groundbreaking 1943 Vincente Minelli film, De La Soul’s Cabin in the Sky features unreleased recordings from late member Trugoy the Dove. On shine, his first album in a decade, singer turned in-demand songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. cracks open the door to his intimate performance space. Portland, Oregon’s Haley Heynderickx and Portland, Maine’s Max García Conover team up for What of Our Nature, a set of Woody Guthrie-inspired folk duets.

Cadet is the seventh album (and second of the year) from George Lewis Jr.’s long-running project Twin Shadow; retaining the atmosphere of Georgie, it bears more of the signature rhythmic textures of his earlier catalogue. Genre-scrambling producer Daniel Lopatin mined a now-defunct Internet Archive sample library for his 11th album as Oneohtrix Point Never, Tranquilizer. The solo venture of Chicago’s Kai Slater, Sharp Pins are at the peak of their lo-fi DIY powers on Balloon Balloon Balloon, the follow-up to their March 2025 breakthrough, Radio DDR.
