While you continue to hunker down, thaw out, or trudge through the world, give a listen to January’s final batch of new releases.

Now down to a duo, Portland combo JOSEPH counter heartbreak with the kind of resilience that can only come from sibling support on Closer to Happy. Tyler Ballgame’s debut, For the First Time, Again, is a baroque-pop confection that centers the Rhode Island singer’s expressive, acrobatic voice.

On No Love Lost to Kindness, their fifth LP, New Zealand’s Yumi Zouma deliver sugary melodies with heavier production that still sparkles and gleams. With production by garage rock auteur Ty Segall, Waking Up is an electrifying statement from Annabelle Chairlegs, the Austin project fronted by Lindsey Mackin.

Listen for spotlights on new records like these (and more) every week on the XPN Morning Show and Indie Rock Hit Parade.

The latest in his series of covers collections, Marc Broussard ably tackles vintage jukebox favorites on S.O.S. V: Songs of the ’50s. Fusing psych-rock, city pop and tropical rhythms into his own distinctive blend, Shintaro Sakamoto’s Yoo-Hoo is a sumptuous sonic adventure. Take Me as I Am is as much a coming out party for powerhouse vocal trio Dames Brown as it is a loving tribute to its late producer, Detroit legend Amp Fiddler.

While working on what would become Secret Love, Dry Cleaning scrapped more than an album’s worth of material before teaming up with producer Cate Le Bon; she encouraged South London combo to explore sounds outside their trademark post-punk idiom. Oklahoma songwriter Zach Bryan dispatches a generous quantity of material on his sixth LP, With Heaven on Top, including his striking (and controversial) single “Bad News.”

Wakefield trio The Cribs return with their ninth album of energetic indie rock, Selling a Vibe; following their self-produced 2020 release Night Network, the Jarman brothers recruited former Chairlift member Patrick Wimberly to add glossy sheen to their power pop anthems.
