S.G. Goodman on World Cafe

In Appalachian culture, it’s tradition to “plant by the signs.” Farmers use the moon’s phases and the zodiac to determine when to sow and harvest.

That’s the way s.g.goodman grew up in Kentucky.

“I was weaned from my mother by the phases of the moon, potty trained” she says. “My brother cuts his hair by the signs.”

It got Goodman thinking about how belief systems are passed down. She captures those ideas in her latest record, Planting by the Signs. She sat down with kallao to chat about the album, plus a stellar live performance. 🌱
