Beth Orton joins host Stephen Kallao

Beth Orton was driving when she got the call that she’d been dropped by her record label. Rather than giving up, she bought a beaten-up old piano, retreated to her garden shed, and got to work on the songs that would become Weather Alive. As she shares in a conversation on the World Cafe, Orton felt a freedom making the new record, which she credits in part to flying under the radar as an artist. Hear her reflections on a 20-plus year career, along with a live performance of some of the new music.
