WXPN Video Roundup: Mary Timony, Laura Jane Grace, Charlie Parr, and more
This week in “Videos You Missed at XPN,” we’re highlighting a full Free At Noon performance, a special World Cafe session that serves as a NON-COMM preview, a beloved Philly band back from the dead, and more.
Mary Timony – WXPN Free At Noon (Full Set)
Guitar master and post-punk/indie-rock visionary Mary Timony stopped by World Cafe Live to play Free At Noon about a month ago, and we’re not yet over her energizing set. Watch the full set — that XPN’s Izabella Patrizio described as “tasteful and succinct” — at the link below. And check out her latest solo full-length, Untame the Tiger.
Laura Jane Grace: World Cafe (Full Interview & Performance)
Another iconic woman in the punk world, Laura Jane Grace, stopped by the XPN offices recently, and spoke to Raina Douris for World Cafe. Their chat covers topics of self-development that run skip-deep — like Grace’s full-body tattoos and facial feminization surgery (the latter being the experience that gave her latest LP its name, Hole In My Head) — and meta-physical as well. When asked about her life’s more challenging stories, and why she keeps them with her, she responds, “its because they make you who you are.”
The Teeth – “Ashes To Ashes” (The Key Studio Sessions)
Philly’s The Teeth are back. After fifteen years away, the scene-sters returned to Johnny Brenda’s in January, selling-out two back-to-back shows. And in part, they have the internet to thank; their song “Ball of the Dead Rat,” years after its release, floated to thousands of listeners on Spotify’s algorithm. Now, The Teeth are back and in full swing, as evidenced in their Key Studio Session performance below. It’s an episode that curator and XPN Local Show Host John Vettese had imagined, but never saw coming.
Meet The Kentucky Gentlemen of the Black Opry Residency
If you’re still not familiar with The Black Opry Residency, it was an initiative held here at XPN to nurture the talents of a select group of Black country artists. From the program, we met The Kentucky Gentlemen, two men who found that when they stepped outside the box of who they were “supposed” to be — like football players or conservative Southerners — found happiness in music. Watch the following video to meet Brandon and Derek Campbell of The Kentucky Gentlemen in their home in Nashville, Tennessee.
Charlie Parr – “Portland Avenue” (Live on WXPN’s Folk Show)
XPN’s Folk Show had special guest Charlie Parr in the studio recently for this intimate performance. Check out the Minnesota-based artist play “Portland Avenue” on steel guitar for your daily dose of Americana folk music.
