WXPN Charitable Giving

5 Ways to Make a Charitable Contribution to WXPN

WXPN is legally designated as a nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible. We are a member-supported, public media organization from the University of Pennsylvania. What does that mean? It means that even though we are part of the University of Pennsylvania, donations from members are our largest and most reliable source of financial support. That’s why we ask the people who rely on our public service to invest in it, to the degree that works for you. We are here for you every day, 365 days a year, which is why every day is the right day to give. We offer several options to support the station and meet your needs.

1. Join the Leadership Circle

Interested in deepening your connection with WXPN? Joining the Leadership Circle, where membership giving becomes philanthropy, may be the next step for you. This small-but-mighty group of members values public media and independent music and expresses those values with their generous giving to WXPN.  They are the vanguard of our musical community, helping us realize our most ambitious projects.

Leadership Circle members also get exclusive behind-the-scenes access to special events, a monthly newsletter with exclusive content, and the satisfaction of knowing their gifts make WXPN accessible to all.

2. Donate a Challenge Gift

Each year, WXPN hosts three on-air Membership Drives and two one-day fundraising days to secure  financial resources for the cultural programming and services you know and love. These Drives motivate listeners to become members, ensuring the continuation of our essential music public service and its positive impact.

Challenge Gifts inspire listeners to become members by offering a match. The proof is in the numbers! Membership Drive Hours with a Challenge generate 55% more revenue. In fact, during the seven-day Winter 2023 Membership Drive, 15 Challenge donors inspired 1,812 people to donate $178,538, accounting for 82% of the total funds raised!

The Challenge donor and the member get to experience the joy of giving AND it doubles the impact of both gifts. It’s a win-win-win and further demonstrates how much more is possible when our music loving community comes together.

3. Support Musicians On Call

“Music has a healing effect on the mind and spirit which helps the body heal as well.” – Family member, Bryn Mawr Hospital

Musicians On Call is an outreach program of WXPN that offers the healing power of music to those who need it most with volunteer musical performances and virtual sessions. In its two decades of service, it has helped over 150,000 patients and their families….and counting.  Extended time in the hospital can generate stress and anxiety while negatively impacting patient well-being. Musicians On Call offers a way to transform the hospital environment with the familiarity and health benefits of music, thanks to the efforts of talented volunteer musicians, trained guides, and committed hospital administrators.

The goal of the WXPN Musicians On Call Program is to bring the healing power of live music to patients undergoing treatment or unable to leave their hospital beds. Research has repeatedly confirmed the direct, positive effect music has for people in general, including improving blood pressure metrics, helping to manage stress, alleviate pain and/or improve pain tolerance, and improve outlook and overall mood. Studies also show how music helps Alzheimer’s patients recall the past and Parkinson’s patients with temporal structure and organization.

The program serves patients, caregivers and staff at 9 Philadelphia area hospitals, for a total of 11 programs:  Adult patients at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Our Lady of Lourdes Health System (Camden, NJ), Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Christiana Care Health System Wilmington Hospital (Wilmington, DE), and Lankenau Medical Center, child patients at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, and veterans, elders, and palliative care at The Philadelphia Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Community Living Center.

4. Support the NeXtPN: The Innovation Fund

NeXtPN: The Innovation Fund is what sets us apart. It’s more than business as usual. It represents boundary breaking ambitions, innovations powered by human creativity, and a best-in-class team uniquely qualified to deliver on a future-facing strategy that is both audacious and adaptable to our ever-changing world.

Responsive and nimble, the Innovation Fund encompasses all the priorities that allow us to push further and dig deeper. As directed by WXPN General Manager Roger LaMay, the station can apply these resources as needed to the projects encompassed by this big idea.

At the heart of what we do is connect artists and audiences. Music is the blood that pulses through our veins, but we are more dynamic and generative than a simple jukebox. It is our responsibility and our privilege to seek out the most compelling voices—regardless of popularity, following, or background— and to give them opportunities to reach audiences. Encompassed in this effort are projects that tell the story of diversity, engage new partners, and center local communities.

Current Opportunity! Contact us to participate in our Artist Support and Development Challenge with gifts of $10,000 or more!

5. Donate Your Car

WXPN accepts vehicle donations as a form of support. Turn your unwanted car, truck, motorcycle, boat, trailer, jet ski, or even RV (we’re not picky!) into something more productive, like a tax write-off through the WXPN Vehicle Donation Program. The tow is free, and donating is easy!

Leave Your Legacy

Like you, WXPN is planning on being around for years to come. But in order to make sure that our station remains on the center stage of Philadelphia’s independent music scene far into the future, we need your help.

WXPN, in partnership with our colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania’s Office of Gift Planning, are here to help you align your connection with XPN with your estate, tax, and financial planning. With a variety of charitable giving tools and techniques, we can help you make a meaningful gift that achieves maximum impact today and tomorrow, while also meeting your own personal financial planning needs and objectives.

Commit now to claim your place in the Reverb Society

Donors who include WXPN in their estate plans, or who initiate a planned gift of any kind (see below), are welcomed into the Reverb Society, our legacy recognition group. Benefits include two annual events, a quarterly newsletter, and inclusion in the University of Pennsylvania’s Harrison Society, with its own set of benefits and recognition.

6 Ways to Include WXPN in Your Legacy:

1. Leave a Bequest Intention: Naming WXPN in your will is one of the most common ways to realize your music legacy. Whether you wish to donate your entire estate, a portion of your estate, a fixed dollar amount, or a percentage of your assets, bequests are easy to make.

The following language has been approved by the University of Pennsylvania’s counsel as an effective bequest to WXPN: “I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, a nonprofit corporation organized and operating under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the sum of ____________ (or ___ % of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate) to be used for WXPN.”

2. Life Insurance Policy: Name WXPN as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Many policies allow for multiple beneficiaries, so you can easily donate the entirety or a portion of the policy to WXPN. Contact your life insurance provider to designate WXPN as a beneficiary today! Plus, many providers allow you to make these changes online at any time.

3. Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Gifts: Individuals may make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from their IRA directly to WXPN beginning at age 70½. The amount of the QCD is excluded from a donor’s Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), and thus not subject to income tax; donors do not receive any income tax charitable deduction for the gift. Donors aged 72 and older may use QCDs to satisfy some or all of their Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) up to $100,000 annually. It is now possible to make a qualified charitable distribution from an IRA to fund a charitable gift annuity. This opportunity has some limitations and restrictions that differ from standard charitable gift annuities, and these should be examined closely when considering a gift.

4. Charitable Gift Annuity: The simplest of life income gift arrangements, the Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), is a contract between WXPN and a donor, providing payments to one or two beneficiaries at a fixed rate. In exchange for a gift of $10,000 or more, the University of Pennsylvania (who manage these gifts on WXPN’s behalf) will provide an attractive annuity rate and guaranteed payments for life. A CGA can be funded with cash, securities, and sometimes real estate—and for donors aged 70.5 and over, retirement assets. A CGA also allows for potential tax advantages such as a charitable income tax deduction in the year the gift is made and a possible reduction in estate and capital gains taxes; in addition, a portion of the payments may be tax-free. On termination of the CGA, the balance supports WXPN.
