This Day in Music History: Jimi Hendrix give his last performance, Peter Gabriel releases 4 / Security
1968 – Eric Clapton becomes the first famous musician outside of the Beatles to play on one of their songs when he records the guitar solo for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
1970 – At the Isle of Fehmarn in Germany, Jimi Hendrix performs for the last time. He passes away 12 days later on September 18th.
1974 – The 101 All Stars featuring Joe Strummer make their debut at The Telegraph in Brixton Hill, London.
1982 – Peter Gabriel releases his 4th solo album, known by both the number and as Security.
1987 – Performing as the “Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band,” members of the band who survived their 1977 plane crash perform the first of a series of shows to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. The enthusiastic response from fans leads to a permanent reformation of the band, who record new material.
1994 – Bad Religion release their eighth studio album, Stranger Than Fiction. It is their only gold record in the US and last recording with founding guitarist Brett Gurewitz (until his return seven years later).
1997 – Elton John sings a new version of “Candle In The Wind” at Princess Diana’s funeral. The new version, which replaces “Goodbye Norma Jean” with “Goodbye England’s Rose,” becomes the best-selling single of all time.

2002 – With Ian Astbury on lead vocals and Stewart Copeland on drums, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors perform their first concert as “The Doors of the 21st Century.” The show is part of the Harley-Davidson Open Road Tour at the California Speedway in Fontana.
2005 – The Rolling Stones release A Bigger Bang.
