Listen to Free Cake for Every Creature’s EP, 2 love songs
Free Cake for Every Creature recently released the very accurately titled 2 love songs EP on Bandcamp, which features covers of “Another Girl, Another Planet” by 70s London punks The Only Ones, as well as a cover of Sade’s “By Your Side.” Proceeds from the single go to the National Women’s Law Center.
The first of the two tracks retains Free Cake’s quirky lyrics and soft vocals, but packs a punch with a bigger sound brought on by some Car Seat Headrest-sounding guitar riffs. This blend of low-key sweetness with a guitar-driven sound is a beautiful, beautiful thing to behold.
Next, Free Cake gives the Sade song a sweet, whisper-sung indie spin; click here to watch the band perform the song live when they stopped by for a Studio Sessions back in October.
Katie from Free Cake is also featured on the massively addicting, massively poppy tune “Holdin’ Out” by Free Cake bandmate, Evan M. Marre, aka Russel the Leaf. The track is a teaser for Russel the Leaf’s new EP, Janitor Boy, which will be available on March 3rd, and is the second release of the new West Philly indie label, Sleeper Records. The song begins with Marre’s nasal crooning atop a consistent piano tune, then without warning, the song sucks you into a tripped out, Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles/Tame Impala carnival ride, building into a full-blown musical celebration. Through this, Bennet’s soft whispered vocals provide the perfect contrast to the bright and shiny burst of tinkering instruments.
Jam out to the tracks below, and then catch Free Cake for Every Creature when they perform a stacked a lineup with OVLOV, Joy Again, and Spellbinder on March 8th at the Baird Mansion Atrium.
