New Music Show Preview w/ Iron & Wine, Alvvays, & more!
Monday nights mean new music discovery on WXPN, and tonight we get back in the studio to share some great recent finds. The show starts at 8pm and on the menu we’ve got new albums from Lindsay Buckingham and Christine McVie, plus Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and Gov’t Mule. Also, the band Deer Tick are set to release TWO new albums, we’ll hear a new song from each of them. The Philly music scene keeps cooking, we’ll play you new Waxahatchee, The Districts, and Son Little. Plus, check out a few more new tunes we’ll spin this evening.
IRON & WINE “Call It Dreaming”
The last few times we’ve heard from Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, it’s been in collaborative form. Last year he made an album with Jesca Hoop. And before that, he made a covers album with Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell. Not only is Sam back in the comfort of his Iron & Wine moniker, but he’s back with his original label, Sub Pop. BeastEpic is reminiscent of his early albums, intimate and delicate in their arrangements. We also learned that much of the new album was recorded live in the studio which is indicative of why is sounds as honest and as pure as it does. Simply stated it’s another beautiful moment from Iron & Wine.
ALVVAYS “In Undertow”
The band that brought us the song “Archie, Marry Me” a few years ago is back with another clever indie-pop gem. The Toronto based band Alvvays take a heck of a step forward on with their new tune “In Undertow” and their second album, Antisocialites. Frontwoman Molly Rankin is again at the forefront of the bands dreamy pop blend and “In Undertow” soars as an album introduction. Antisocialites won’t be out until September, but this tune is a good place to start.
FIRST IMPRESSION: BEDOUINE
Get ready to fall in love tonight with the music of Bedouine. Bedouine is the musical moniker of Azniv Korkejian, an enchanting Syrian-born songwriter who has lived all over the world, including time in Boston, Houston and most recently Los Angeles. Her music is breezy and beautiful, reminiscent of some of the great singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s. Her debut album comes out June 23rd on Spacebomb Records, a retro-fitted label based out of Richmond, Virginia and run by Matthew E. White. We’ve got a couple songs to spin tonight, including “One of These Days” which you can hear below.
