This year, the Mural Arts Program’s Monument Lab project has pondered the question: what is an appropriate monument for the City of Philadelphia in 2017? This idea has been explored in various installations and workshops across the city, and over the summer, DJ and multimedia artist King Britt and visual artist Joshua Mays worked with students from the Mural Art Philly’s Art Education Program to create a “monumental time portal” titled Dreams, Diaspora, and Destiny.

This interactive music and visual performance will piece together sound samples, student-designed banners and artwork in order to both honor the past, and look with hope upon the future. The event, Youth Monument to the Future, will be free and open to the public this Saturday the 14th at Malcolm X Park in West Philly.

In an Instagram post by DJ King Britt, he shared his collaborators for the event — author Nina “Lyrispect” Ball, drummer Chuck Treece, Heru Shabaka-ra of the Sun Ra Arkestra, and producer and musician John Morrison (a writer for The Key as well). King hints that this event is the first installment in a larger multimedia mural to come in 2018.

Check out the more info on the event here, and listen to Fhloston Paradigm’s track, the King Britt-produced and Matthew Law remixed “…GLOW ft. Jacqueline Constance,” below.
