Jan 19 in Music History: The Beatles begin recording “A Day in the Life,” The Pretenders release their debut album
1934 – Laurens Hammond files for a patent for the pipeless organ with the tonewheel generator. The patent is granted on April 24.
1957 – Johnny Cash appears on national TV for the first time when he performs on The Jackie Gleason Show.
1967 – The Beatles began recording “A Day In The Life” at Abbey Road studios London, recording four takes of the new song. According to Lennon, the inspiration for the first two verses was the death of Tara Browne, the 21-year-old heir to the Guinness fortune who had crashed his Lotus Elan on December 18, 1966 in Redcliffe Gardens.
1980 – The Pretenders release their self-titled, debut album in the US. The album had already been released in the UK, where “Brass In Pocket” gives them their first #1 single in the country on this same date.
