Jan 31 in Music History: Neil Young makes his stage debut, Tori Amos releases Under The Pink

1956 – Elvis Presley signs with the William Morris Agency in order to make himself available to film studios.

1959 – A 17-year-old Bob Dylan (known then as Robert Zimmerman) sees Buddy Holly perform at the Duluth Armory in Minnesota. Three days later, Holly dies in a plane crash.

1963 – A seventeen-year-old Neil Young makes his stage debut at a country club in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

1963 – The Beach Boys record “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Shutdown”

1967 – The Beatles spend a second day at Knole Park in Kent, England to complete filming for the “Strawberry Fields Forever” promotional video. Taking time out from filming John Lennon buys a 1843 circus poster from an antiques shop which provides him with most the lyrics for “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite.”

1970 – In New Orleans, the Grateful Dead are arrested for possession of LSD and barbiturates. The incident which inspires one of their most famous songs, “Truckin’.” Apparently the band had run afoul of mob interests in Texas, and the mob alerted the NOPD. This explains lines like “Houston, too close to New Orleans,” and “Set up, like a bowling pin.”

1970 – The Jackson 5 score their first of four #1 hits on the US singles chart with “I Want You Back.”

1972 – Al Green releases Let’s Stay Together.

1994 – Tori Amos releases Under the Pink.

1998 – The Bruce Springsteen “Come Together” benefit concert, organized for the family of a New Jersey police officer killed in the line of duty, turns into an impromptu E Street Band reunion that also features Southside Johnny and other Jersey musicians.
