Shemekia Copeland wants to sow understanding on ‘Done Come Too Far’

Shemekia Copeland isn’t afraid to dig into it. Rightfully considered one the greatest blues singers of her generation, the modern-day Queen of the Blues is not afraid to talk about school shootings, Black empowerment or “the talk” — the conversation Black parents have with their children about the dangers they face due to racism and unjust treatment from authority figures.

Those are some of the topics at play on her latest album, Done Come Too Far, the third in a trilogy of albums following Uncivil War and America’s Child. In this session, Copeland talks about what inspired Done Come Too Far and how she balanced heavy themes with more lighthearted ones.
